BOSNIA I HERZEGOVINA

May 2025

Our first stop was Sarajevo, a city that breathes history and diversity. Walking through the Baščaršija district feels like strolling through two worlds at once—East and West intertwine in every corner. The streets are full of life, with small cafés that invite you to sit and relax, while the call to prayer from the mosques echoes in the background. A unique atmosphere that captivated us from the very first moment.

We were so impressed that years later we decided to return, partly to once again enjoy its exquisite cuisine. The crispy and flavorful burek, and the ćevapi served with flatbread and onions, took us back to the most authentic flavors of the region.

From Sarajevo, we headed west to Jajce, a village that feels like it came straight out of a fairy tale. There, an impressive waterfall cascades right in the center of the town, creating an unforgettable scene. The old water mills along the Pliva River add a bucolic touch that completes the picture. At this time of year, the water flow is especially strong, and the sound of the rushing water gives the place a unique energy.

Over the next two days, we explored the south of the country—Herzegovina—using the charming city of Mostar as our base. It’s a place that leaves a lasting impression. The scars of war are still visible on many buildings and streets, and it’s impossible to ignore the weight of its recent history. Yet at the same time, life flows vigorously around the Neretva River, and the city overflows with energy, beauty, and hospitality. Its famous Old Bridge (Stari Most) is undoubtedly the crown jewel: a majestic arch connecting both sides of the river and symbolizing, too, the hope for unity. But the entire historic center deserves to be explored at a leisurely pace. The cobbled alleyways, the markets, the cafés with terraces overlooking the water—every corner holds something special.

From Mostar, we took several day trips; one of the most magical moments was visiting the Blagaj Tekke monastery, nestled at the base of a cliff beside a crystal-clear spring that emerges directly from the rock. It’s a place that blends spirituality and natural beauty in an almost hypnotic way.

We also explored the beautiful Ottoman village of Počitelj, with its stone houses, watchtower, and a timeless atmosphere. And of course, we couldn’t miss a swim at the Kravica waterfalls—a natural paradise where water cascades like a curtain into an emerald-green pool. A refreshing end to an unforgettable journey.

In my opinion, the best place to eat Burek in all the Balkans. Super tasty and not greasy at all. The way they prepare it is also unique — you can't visit Sarajevo without trying it.

Restaurant right next to waterfalls, lakes, and surrounded by nature. The food is good, but the setting is even better. It's one of the best options if you're visiting Jajce.
